Jordanian authorities detain three Communist Party members without charge

Authorities in Jordan have detained three members of the Jordanian Communist Party (JCP) in what the party says is part of a broader crackdown on political activism in the country.

In a statement issued on March 9, the party said two of its leaders, Dr. Omar Awad and Osama Zain Aldin, were arrested by security forces the previous day. The JCP said the detentions were carried out arbitrarily and without legal justification. The arrests followed the earlier detention of Bahaa Aldin Elayyan, a party member and university student.

The party condemned the arrests, describing them as an attempt to pressure the organization and limit its political activities. According to the JCP, the detentions represent a violation of constitutional rights and international commitments related to freedom of expression, political participation, and organization.

The JCP called for the immediate release of the detained members and urged political parties, trade unions, and human rights organizations to speak out against what it described as growing restrictions on political freedoms.

On March 12, the party reported that Zain Aldin had been released without charges, while Awad and Elayyan remained in detention.

The arrests come amid what observers describe as an intensified campaign by the Jordanian authorities against political parties, activists, journalists, and other critics. The developments are unfolding against the backdrop of rising tensions across West Asia linked to ongoing regional conflicts.

International reactions have also followed the detentions. The Communist Party USA condemned the arrests, calling them an act of anti-communist repression and urging Jordanian authorities to halt measures targeting political activists.
