People’s Coalition on Food Sovereignty – Global strongly condemns the violence of Thailand’s state forces against the APEC Summit protesters in Bangkok yesterday.

Here is the statement from People’s Democracy Movement of Thailand (PDMT):

Today, November 18, 2022, around 12.30pm, Thai riot police use force to demolish β€œRatsadon Stop APEC 2022” – a group of civil society and community organizations in Thailand who peacefully opposes the Thai Government’s proposal on Bio-Circular-Green (BCG) Economy Model and its attempt to greenwash major polluters. The demolition has sustained many protestors with severe injuries. PDMT concerns that the Thai riot police’s brutal attacks and physical harassment against protestors are conducted improperly and without law enforcement protocol, especially on the use of rubber guns that caused permanent eye damage to one protestor, as witnessed widely on social media. At least 25 protestors were also arrested.

People’s Democracy Movement of Thailand (PDMT) condemns the Thai state’s violence to suppress the rights to peaceful demonstration, as prescribed under the Thai Constitution. We also demand the following:

1. Thai Government must be accountable and responsible for all damages especially for those who were suffered from harmful injuries, loss of organs, and disabled from the state’s excessive use of force to demolish peaceful demonstration;

2. Thai Government must immediately and unconditionally release all detained protestors and journalists;

3. Thai Government must apologize to the public and revoke all repressive policies used to control and suppress rights to freedom of assembly, as to prevent future harmful damages and casualties to civilians.
